“Completely absurd” – Denmark plans to integrate one-legged pirates

Date:

A Nigerian pirate is seriously injured and loses a leg in a firefight with the Danish navy. The soldiers take Lucky Frances to Denmark; he recently received a residence permit. The fact that he now has to take a Danish course and be integrated into the labor market is now causing a heated debate.

In 2021, Frances fought in a battle with the Danish frigate Esbern Snare in the Gulf near Guinea – four other pirates were killed and the Nigerian was taken to Denmark seriously injured. There he was found guilty of endangering human life, but he was not imprisoned for it. However, he applied for asylum and was granted a residence permit in January.

Comprehensive job search assistance for amputees
Now the pirate must also be offered a comprehensive integration program. He must learn Danish and receive support in finding work as an amputee. The training plan, career advice and an ‘integration contract’ are intended to help him become an active member of Danish society. He also received funding for a prosthetic leg.

Danish People’s Party: “This is absolutely absurd”
Right-wing politicians are outraged. “This is absolutely absurd. “This man should never have come to Denmark and the idea that he could now be meaningfully integrated into Denmark is completely outrageous,” said Mikkel Björn, integration spokesman for the Danish People’s Party, according to “The Telegraph.” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of the Danish Social Democrats is coming under increasing pressure on this issue. “I cannot defend this decision,” she said.

Pirate costs Denmark over half a million euros
The costs for the taxpayer are also discussed. In total, Frances is said to have cost the state 4.2 million Danish crowns (about 560,000 euros), reports the Danish radio station DR.

The pirate initially stated that he wanted to return to his home country after his recovery. Then, surprisingly, he decided to apply for asylum in Denmark. “That makes perfect sense,” explains his lawyer Emma Ring Damgaard. “He faces a long and painful rehabilitation program. You can’t just send him back to Nigeria.”
