Traffic Clearance – S7: Controversial until the closing ceremony

Date:

There was a festival atmosphere on the S7 today: almost 2,000 guests came to the historic traffic opening celebration. The two-lane highway will connect the A2 motorway with the Hungarian M 80 in the future. The road is especially an important economic factor for the Jennersdorf district.

The western section of the Fürstenfeld highway S7 was opened in the presence of more than 2,000 guests. The road, which cost around 900 million euros, will be opened to traffic today. The “heart” is the Rudersdorf tunnel. Then it’s over: cars and trucks have to continue on the B65.

The eastern part is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025
The eastern part in Burgenland should also be ready by the summer of 2025. More than 15,000 cars and trucks would pass over the S7 every day.

Dorner: Milestone for transport policy
State Councilor Heinrich Dorner speaks about a milestone in transport policy: “The S7 will significantly reduce traffic congestion in communities and ultimately give citizens a better quality of life. At the same time, the business location is being upgraded.”

Great hope for new jobs
For Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler, “the S 7 is a first spark for new business locations and jobs in the region.” There is also great hope, says Drexler, that the communities will be freed from through traffic and that Styria will become closer. together with Burgenland and Hungary. This creates completely new economic areas.

Objections delayed the project for decades
Numerous objections to environmental impact assessments and water legislation have repeatedly postponed the start of construction of the project, which had been planned since the end of the last millennium, until the first works began in 2017. Environmentalists criticized the fact that green spaces are being lost and that animals, especially birds and bats, are losing valuable habitats. Here Asfinag responds: “The S7 is an absolute showcase project in terms of sustainability,” said ASFINAG board member Hartwig Hufnagl towards the project’s opponents.

The Minister of Green was unable to attend
Speaking of opponents, the Greens have spoken out against the project from the start. It is not surprising that Minister Gewessler could not attend the opening ceremony.
