An accident happened in South Korea on Wednesday morning during military maneuvers that were to take place in response to North Korea’s missile test on Tuesday. The launch of its own short-range Hyunmoo-2C missile failed. It crashed into an airbase near Gangneung city, exploded and started a fire.
As South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported, citing the country’s general staff, no one was injured in the accident near the east coast city of Gangneung. However, some residents of the city panicked, initially thinking of an attack by North Korea. The army apologized to the townspeople.
Cause of crash unknown for now
It is not yet known why the launch of the missile from an air force base went wrong. According to Yonhap, the missile’s warhead was found about a kilometer from the launch site and just 700 meters from residential buildings.
Gangneung residents have been concerned for some time over rival North Korea’s increasingly provocative weapons tests. Their concern grew after the military and government officials spent hours explaining the explosion near the city.
According to the NK News website, which publishes news and analysis about North Korea, a nuclear warhead built into the missile did not explode on impact.
North Korea fired a medium-range ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan on Tuesday. According to the Japanese Coast Guard, two missiles flew toward the Sea of Japan and crashed into the sea outside Japan’s so-called Exclusive Economic Zone, 200 miles (about 320 kilometers) around the archipelago.
