Berlin Return Campaign – D: Suspected IS supporters back

Date:

The German government has returned several German nationals from northeastern Syria. A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior confirmed this in Berlin on Wednesday. The federal police took part in the investigation. The ministry gave no further details, including regarding personal rights and the protection of minors.

“Spiegel” and “Bild” had previously reported on the repatriation of suspected German supporters of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) and their children from Syria. The four women and some children had been in Kurdish prison camps for years.

The women are now being examined
The federal prosecutor’s office and other public prosecutors are investigating the women, among other things, on suspicion of membership of a terrorist organization. The German government has repeatedly returned IS supporters from Syria to Germany. Several trials resulted in several years in prison.

Austria also brought back children from Syria in the summer
In early July, the Austrian Foreign Ministry announced the repatriation of two children from a Kurdish detention center in Syria. The repatriation to Austria had already taken place at the beginning of June. In 2019, two children of the allegedly deceased Viennese IS supporter Sabina S. were returned.
