“Informal Summit” – Putin wants to celebrate his 70s with heads of state

Date:

On his 70th birthday this Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin was celebrated by state guests in his native St. Petersburg in the beautiful Constantine Palace. It was an “informal summit” of the heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.

Peskov had previously emphasized that Putin would spend the anniversary on numerous appointments. Plenty of phone calls are also scheduled for Friday.

Putin not isolated?
Putin may want to show once again that despite his war of aggression against Ukraine, he is not internationally isolated. The CIS, a successor to the Soviet Union that collapsed more than thirty years ago, includes the authoritarian Central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In addition, Belarus, which is considered the last dictatorship in Europe, and the southern Caucasus states of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Guest list still a secret
Peskow initially did not name names from the “informal summit” guest list. The meetings are in any case scheduled around noon. “This will be a very important date in the context of preparations for the CIS summit scheduled for next week,” Peskov said. The meeting is scheduled for October 14 in the Kazakh capital Astana.
