In the past two winters, more people than ever before (about 21 percent each) were vaccinated against the flu. Due to the measures surrounding the coronavirus, such as the obligation to wear a mask, there has been no flu wave. Which now threatens a stronger wave, as experts warn. As in 2020 and 2021, the city of Vienna will again this year start with a free flu vaccination campaign.
The free flu vaccination will start on November 2. As the office of health councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) informed the APA, 400,000 doses of vaccine were ordered. Appointments for flu vaccination can be booked online or by phone from 24 October.
According to the town hall, about half of the 400,000 vaccine doses are vaccinated in the municipal vaccination centers or the ÖGK vaccination centers, the other half in the private sector. People who live, study or work in Vienna are vaccinated regardless of where they live. The vaccination campaign will run until January 2023.
“I am very pleased that through a joint effort by the City of Vienna, the Medical Association and the ÖGK, we have been able to provide free flu vaccinations again this season. This makes an important contribution against multiple exposure to Covid-19 and flu,” Hacker points out.
Vaccination campaign cost Vienna 9.9 million euros
He knows that all states believe that vaccination should be a natural part of health care and therefore of the health insurance system. The federal government should have implemented this by next season, he demanded. This year, the federal states would intervene again. According to Hacker, Vienna is investing a total of 9.9 million euros in the flu vaccination campaign this year.
“From the beginning, the Medical Association has been a strong partner in the implementation of the flu vaccination campaign in Vienna,” assured Erik Randall Huber, Vice-President of the Medical Association for Vienna and President of the Curia for Physicians: “As of today, 700 surgeries have already signed up to participate in the promotion.”
