Anyone who thinks they can save money by buying bulk packaging is often wrong. According to the “Food Watch” test, these are often more expensive (per kilo) than small format products.
The food monitors of the consumer protection organization walked through the shelves of the supermarkets with eagle eyes and paid exactly. The result is shocking – for quite a few products the price per kilo and liter was significantly lower for the smaller containers than for the larger version of the same product. “Anyone who buys large packs can pay a lot more if they don’t count exactly,” said Lisa Kernegger, head of Food Watch.
Sweets with a bitter aftertaste
Her most egregious example: a chocolate brand whose package size drove its price to double digits. We’ve also set our sights on the “Mozart” ball: The slightly heavier octagonal plastic jar with 17 balls costs a whopping 31 percent more per pound than the bag with just one less round of candy.
Product scanner tip: Before consumers succumb to cheap temptations, it’s worth looking at the base price. This should be stated on the shelf as a comparison. As reported, there is currently also a fuss about Mars bars. Your purchase from the manufacturer is rejected by supermarkets as too expensive.
