Homosexual wounded – hate crimes: “Sacrifice is often ashamed”

Date:

On Friday, a large-scale police raid broke out a probably right-wing extremist network that trapped homosexual men, sometimes seriously injured and even tried to try murder. The scene is shaken, but is relieved to intervene in the executive.

“We are happy that something is happening,” says Joe Niedermayer, chairman of the Rosalila Pantherinen, an LGBTQ club in Graz. Because what the public nowadays learned that perpetrators of the so-called right-wing extremist environment attracted homosexual men, then injured and humiliated-known in the homosexual scene for months. “However, we did not know to the extent that had.”

Two victims are in the advice of the Rosalila Panther. “Already in July last year a man came to us who was lured to a meeting point in southern Graz with a dating profile. A group hit him there. The same thing happened to a friend,” says Niedermayer. “We both encouraged to go to the police.”

Must report the affected
“These are not a proud, open queers who enter into this,” says the Tuning Ball organizer. “These are often shy, calm people who are generally ashamed of them and also for their sexuality.” The Rosalila Panther now appeals to all those affected by hate crimes. “Anyone who has the power not to be intimidated can make a difference!”

Hate becomes more salonable
Niedermayer also notices that the hatred becomes more socially acceptable in daily life. Younger teenagers come to the club of the club, “mob” and insult him. In some cases the perpetrators also become physical. “It is important to display everything. The police learn a lot in this area and is becoming increasingly sensitive when it comes to hate crimes.” When politicians such as Donald Trump, Wladimir Putin or Viktor Orbán rush against homosexuals: “This encourages people – and that is a new phenomenon”.

What else can you do? Niedermayer relies on educational projects in schools. “For example, with strange facts, we talk openly with students about their opinions and thoughts. We give no opinion, we try taboo to taboo. Queer people are normal people like you and me.”

Spö, Greens and Neos furious
There were also first reactions from politics on Friday afternoon. Spö Equal Treatment spokesperson Mario Lindner was shocked. For him it was only the “sad tip of an iceberg”. This shows: “Again that the situation for queer people is increasingly threatening in Austria,” says David Stögmüller, LGBTIQ+spokesperson for the Greens. Neos-Lgbtiq+spokeswoman Henrike Brandstötter also condemned the case. “This violence is not just an attack on individuals – it is an attack on freedom, human rights and our open society.”

However, the police assume that the number of offenses is even higher than before. Affected people are therefore asked to report to LKA Styria on 059133/60-3333.
