Short shelf life – Corona vaccine is destroyed very often

Date:

The German Ministry of Health assumes that the corona vaccine will be destroyed “in quite a few cases”. The ministry justified this to the “world” by saying that the vaccines are still only available in multi-dose containers, which, according to the approval, can only be stored for a few hours when opened.

“At the current speed of the vaccination campaign, it cannot be assumed that there will always be enough people vaccinated on site to use up all available vaccine doses in a multi-dose container,” the ministry said. It also said: “In this case, a vaccine would have to be rejected in quite a few cases at the moment.”

Vaccination campaign sharply reduced
According to the vaccination dashboard, approximately 200 million doses of vaccine have been delivered to vaccination centers, doctors’ surgeries, company doctors and pharmacies in Germany. As of April 8, 86.4 percent had been vaccinated. The vaccination campaign has slowed down considerably in recent weeks. A total of 38,000 doses had been administered on Friday.

The German Ministry of Health also has information about destruction in the central federal vaccine warehouse, the “Welt” reports. Reasons include “breakage during picking, damage during transport (e.g. vibrations, accidents), loss of liquid and the reached best-before date”.

“Forward-looking” delivery to third countries required
The German General Practitioners Association spoke out in favor of providing vaccines in a “foreseen” manner to third countries with a current need. “Unfortunately, we currently see very little demand for vaccination appointments,” said Welt’s chairman Ulrich Weigeldt. Every effort must therefore be made to ensure that “as little vaccine as possible expires and ultimately has to be destroyed,” he demanded.
