More military aid – EU countries want to train Ukrainian soldiers

Date:

The EU countries want to train some 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers in the future. The dpa learned from EU circles that there was a corresponding agreement by the Political and Security Committee (PSK). The German government has put together a new package to support Ukraine. Following a corresponding request from Kiev, Berlin wants to deliver equipment for the approaching winter as soon as possible for a total of eleven million euros. Meanwhile, Slovakia has handed over two more Zuzana-type wheeled howitzers to Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia.

The ambassadors of the EU countries meet in the PSK chaired by the EU Foreign Service. The decision has yet to be formally confirmed by EU countries. After an informal EU summit on Friday, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said he welcomed an agreement on a training mission for Ukrainian troops, but without giving a specific figure. As “Welt am Sonntag” and “Spiegel” report, Germany and Poland, among others, have to train the Ukrainian soldiers. Courses are also planned in other EU countries.

Berlin sends eleven million euros winter package
Germany also sends 100,000 warm undercoats and other winter clothing, 100 heatable team tents, hundreds of mobile power generators and pallets of food packages, known by the Bundeswehr as one-man packages.

In the late summer, the Ukrainian defense minister urgently requested winter equipment for his troops through NATO. In a letter to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Oleksiy Resnikov wrote that uniforms for 200,000 soldiers were urgently needed. At the time, several other NATO countries notified Alliance headquarters that they wanted to put together winter packages similar to those of Germany.

“Gift for Putin”
Meanwhile, Slovakia handed over two-wheeled howitzers to Ukraine. “We have given the aggressor Putin another present,” Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad wrote sarcastically on Twitter on Sunday. Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70 on Friday.

Ordered eight howitzers
The delivery is part of a commercial order for a total of eight Zuzana howitzers, two of which are pending. In addition, Denmark, Norway and Germany jointly want to finance the production of 16 more weapon systems of this type for Kiev.

Zuzana is a further development of the Czechoslovak Dana SPG. The gun now uses the NATO standard 155mm caliber. The maximum firing range is more than 39 kilometers. The basis is a heavy four-axle truck.
