140 km/h per hour – Hurricane “Julia” made landfall in Nicaragua

Date:

Hurricane Julia made landfall in Nicaragua on Sunday with winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour. According to the weather bureau, the tropical storm reached the coast at Laguna de Perlas in the morning. The inhabitants of the area had already prepared in advance, moored fishing boats and did their shopping.

In the city of Bluefields, one of the largest coastal cities, the tropical storm, which had previously been upgraded to a category one hurricane, was felt from midnight. An AFP photographer in the city reported strong gusts of wind and heavy rain. Media reports have already talked of roofs being torn off and trees falling, as well as power outages.

Julia is expected to race across Nicaragua on Sunday before continuing near or along the Pacific coasts of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala until Monday.

Thousands of people rescued
About 6,000 people have been taken to safety in Nicaragua. The NHC warned that “life-threatening flash floods and mudslides” are possible early next week due to heavy rains over Central America and southern Mexico.

About a week and a half ago, Hurricane Ian hit the US state of Florida. The cyclone wreaked havoc in the southeastern US state, flooding large areas and destroying countless homes. More than 100 people died as a result of the magnitude-four hurricane, according to US media reports.
