A weeklong vacation shortly after the devastating flood disaster in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia last summer put German Family Affairs Minister Anne Spiegel under pressure: the Greens politician now drew consequences and threw in the towel. “I’m doing this to avoid damage to the office,” she justified her resignation.
“Due to political pressure, I have decided today to make available the office of the Federal Minister of Family Affairs,” he said mirror on Monday. She thanked everyone who supported her out of solidarity. It was not until Sunday evening that Spiegel apologized for her behavior as Environment Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate during the flood disaster in 2021. She was in charge of civil defense at the time, but left shortly after the flood for a four-week family vacation.
Spiegel: “That was a mistake”
In a public statement, the Green politician cited family reasons as the reason for the holiday ten days after the devastating flood. “It was a mistake that we went on vacation for so long and we went on vacation. My apologies for this mistake,” Spiegel said.
She had received no support from the leaders of the Greens. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), on the other hand, had a spokeswoman explain that he was working closely and trustingly with the family minister.
It is already the second politician to resign after the flood disaster. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU) has also been criticized for vacationing in Majorca during the disaster and took her hat off a few days ago.
