The next hacker attack in Styria: This time the well-known thermal baths in Bad Waltersdorf are the victims. The perpetrators have encrypted data and demanded a ransom, but the thermal baths continue to operate.
The municipality of Feldbach was only the target of a hacker attack last week, the ICT of the city was largely down for a week, but has been running again since Monday. Now the thermal baths in Bad Waltersdorf are the target of cyber criminals. “The procedure is the same as in Feldbach, we are in contact with the mayor,” thermal spa manager Gernot Deutsch told “Krone”.
The problems started on Sunday morning when some employees lost access to their computers. During the day it became clear: the whole system is “contaminated”. The perpetrators were first contacted on Sunday, followed by a concrete ransom demand on Monday – in a cryptocurrency, of course.
Chip bracelets don’t work
“It’s a long-prepared, professional attack,” Deutsch says. However, the thermal baths can continue to run. The only restriction for the guests: the chip wristbands, with which you can easily pay in restaurants, are currently not working.
In Bad Waltersdorf, the insurance company is now negotiating with the perpetrators, and detectives and IT experts are also involved. It is still unclear through which digital gateway the attack took place and to what extent data was stolen. After all, the e-mail accounts have been working again since Tuesday afternoon.
