More than 800 million people are at risk of starvation as a result of the Russo-Ukrainian war. They live in about 50 states that depend on Russian and Ukrainian agricultural exports. At the CGTN (China Global Television Network) forum, participants called for “urgent action by the world community” to “improve the situation”.
Although there was no global food security in Ukraine before the war and up to a billion people were malnourished, the situation has now deteriorated again. About 50 countries depend on Russian and Ukrainian agricultural exports, said WWF International director Marco Lambertini.
An example is the more difficult supply of urea, an important element for making fertilizers. The reason is the sanctions against Russian oil companies, which have pushed up prices. Sunflower oil is also scarce at the moment because the export from Ukraine is becoming more difficult. However, this could be replaced by oil palms and soybeans, IFAD representative Matteo Marchisio suggested.
How healthcare should be improved
According to him, “sovereign governments should set aside the transnational corporations that have a monopoly on agriculture”. Forum participants agreed that, overall, immediate action and more robust and resilient systems were needed. These include basic infrastructure and (international) emergency mobilization. If action is not taken quickly, it “casts a bad light on the moral character of the global community”. It is estimated that approximately one billion people worldwide are currently suffering from hunger.
