The mega steamship ‘Icon of the Seas’ departed its maiden voyage to the Caribbean from its home port of Miami on Saturday. At 365 meters long, the ship is the largest cruise ship in the world and can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers on its 20 decks.
Eight different areas should offer something for every taste. Guests can relax by the seven swimming pools and nine whirlpools, admire the 17-metre high waterfall or visit one of the 40 restaurants and bars. Entertainment will be provided by 50 musicians and comedians, as well as a 16-piece orchestra.
Environmentalists are not convinced
The ‘Icon of the Seas’ is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is considered a cleaner fuel than conventional diesel oil. However, environmentalists warn that LNG is still a fossil fuel and produces significant greenhouse gas emissions.
During her maiden voyage, the ‘Icon of the Seas’ will spend a week in the Caribbean. The program includes stops in the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
