The zookeeper was surprised when a man with a Braunau license plate showed up with his dog in front of the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter on Friday afternoon, which he immediately wanted to give up. “If you don’t take him, I’ll have to shoot him,” he threatened.
After the man was informed of the murder ban, it turned out that he made this statement only out of desperation and when he was overwhelmed. He got the Maltese crossbreed “Benni” from a friend, gave it to his mother, who was suffering from cancer, and took it to the rented apartment after her death, but he wasn’t allowed to keep it there, according to Pfotenhilfe.
“We just couldn’t refuse poor little ‘Benni’. He is one of the many victims of careless husbandry. He has no passport, is not chipped or vaccinated, not neutered, not toilet trained, anxious and neglected. We are now dealing with high costs,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler angrily. “The poor soul has not received much love in her short life, so there is still a lot to catch up on.”
Think carefully about getting a pet
On World Dog Day, the animal welfare organization calls on all people who need a dog or other pet to think about it.
full family member
“An animal should be treated as a full member of the family. You should not look around animal welfare organizations until all your concerns have been resolved, that the dog does not have to stay at home while working and can also go on holiday or at least that the care is insured – and only there, if possible,” says Stadler “Because now many animals are being abandoned due to rising prices, while the animal shelters themselves are cutting back and dealing with heavy additional burdens.”
