There has been a red alert on the eastern border since the spring. The emergency services of the Ministry of the Interior have declared war on illegal migration and people smugglers. With a total of 2,500 priority checks (!), 440 smugglers have been arrested since the beginning of the year – a huge plus compared to previous years.
“The high number of arrests shows the need for our action. It is thanks to the investigators involved that small and large successes can always be achieved,” explains Interior Minister Gerhard Karner proudly. International cooperation with neighboring countries is also a central point in the fight against crime.
Numerous arrests have already taken place on Hungarian territory and the controls in the Slovakian border area are already taking effect. Eight people smugglers were arrested there in a very short time, extending the local action by 20 days. According to the ministry, further expansion is not impossible.
The number of asylum applications has also risen sharply since the beginning of this year and more than 56,000 applications have now been registered. The “top countries” are: Afghanistan (12,000 applications), Syria (10,000), India (7,600), Tunisia (7,000) and Pakistan (6,000).
