Israel and Lebanon have signed a “historic deal” to draw a border in the Mediterranean, Israel says, settling their dispute over offshore gas fields. The agreement was brokered by the United States.
“This historic agreement will strengthen Israel’s security and flush billions into Israel’s economy,” Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
In this way Israel can become more important for the EU as a gas supplier. A confirmation from the Lebanese side was initially pending.
Countries officially still at war
The United States brokered the agreement between the two neighboring countries, which are officially still at war. Given the gas fields in the Mediterranean, the agreement is also relevant for Europe’s energy supply. Finally, given the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and its aftermath, Israel has pledged to export more gas to Europe.
For his part, Lebanese negotiator Vice President Elias Bou Saab said: “Today we have reached a solution that satisfies both sides.” Lebanon has been “given its full rights and all its comments have been taken into account”.
