Thousands of people took to the streets on Tuesday after the attack on schoolchildren in northern Pakistan. They called for an “end to terrorism” and greater protection of the Pakistani state.
Attackers fired on two school buses in the Swat Valley on Monday, injuring four boys. One of the drivers was killed. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to reports the alleged perpetrators were able to flee on their motorcycles.
Ten years ago, in the same region, Taliban fighters shot and killed Malala Yousafzai, then 15 years old and later winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, in her school bus. Thousands of people took to the streets in the Swat Valley on Tuesday to demand an “end to terrorism” and greater protection and security from the Pakistani state.
Islamists gain strength
The militant Islamists in the north of the country have been gaining momentum for several months, sparking repeated protests from residents. They want the military to act more vigorously against the ruling Taliban. The latter are criticized internationally for their actions against higher education, especially among girls and women.
