A German (56) living in Tyrol fell for a worthless scam by brutal internet scammers. She was fooled into believing she was in love. But the beloved, of course, was invented, the accomplices were now on trial.
In retrospect, she wonders how she could be so naive. Eva (name changed), a 56-year-old living in Tyrol, was literally scammed by criminals on the internet. An alleged UN soldier from Yemen had contacted the unhappily married woman through the dating platform “Lovoo”, faked her feelings and great love, and eventually persuaded her to pay money.
The native German transferred amounts from 2,360 euros to 77,000 euros for customs claims, parcels, flight and hotel bills. “Alex Dollfus”, as the heartthrob called herself on the internet, brought her more than 300,000 euros in just one month. “I was robbed of all my belongings, took a loan and borrowed money from a neighbor,” the victim said. It wasn’t until Eva confided in her estranged husband that she realized “Alex” was a scammer.
Tyrolean police trapped men
A Tunisian (28) living in Germany has been arrested during a fake money transfer in Tyrol, where an additional 55,000 euros were allegedly handed over. Moments later, the handcuffs clicked for a family man (27) from Ghana. “We have absolutely nothing to do with the fraud,” the two accused protest in unison. An acquaintance from Ghana, a former football player and owner of a money exchange office, only promised them a commission of 5,000 euros for a courier service. “I had a weird gut feeling and maybe I was thinking about money laundering,” the 27-year-old admitted. He never thought it possible that it was a so-called love scam.
Sentenced to suspended prison terms
The court was of the opinion that the accused knew nothing about the fraud. But the evidence was lacking. Both were sentenced to seven months in prison and a fine of 480 euros for the attempted fraud in the fictitious transfer only as willful or complicit offenders. Not legally binding.
