No vein found – execution went wrong: killer sues US state

Date:

For more than 20 years, Alan Eugene Miller has been on death row awaiting execution. However, when the triple murderer was due to be executed by lethal injection for his crimes in September, the judiciary was unable to access a vein. The execution was called off after two and a half hours. Now the 57-year-old is suing the US state for “mental and physical torture”.

In August 1999, Miller killed three people – the then-truck driver shot two colleagues before driving to his former employer and killing another person. A court sentenced him to death.

A suitable vein was also sought on the right foot
But when he was due to receive the lethal injection on September 22, no suitable vein was found. The prisoner was stabbed 18 times – without success. They even looked for a vein in his right foot. Martyrdom for the lawyers of the death row inmate. His “whole body was shaking in the tires” as if he had been electrocuted. As a result, the killer experienced “mental and physical torment”.

“Nausea, disorientation, confusion and fear that he was about to be killed… some wounds were leaking blood,” the lawyers describe the screenplay. After more than two hours, the execution was finally called off. An official explained, “that the convicted inmate’s veins were not accessible under our protocol before the expiry of the death sentence”.

Prisoner wanted to die via nitrogen hypoxia
As the judiciary searches for a new date for the execution, Miller is now suing the state of Alabama for the pain he suffered. The inmate had previously caused a stir: the former truck driver actually wanted to die of nitrogen hypoxia. Oxygen is extracted from the brain by supplying a high dose of nitrogen. As a result, you quickly become unconscious and die within a short time. But a judge insisted on the use of lethal injections.
