The European Commission has proposed granting Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status for accession to the European Union, a decision that responds to the request of European leaders last June, but that Brussels imposes conditions on the implementation of far-reaching reforms in the judiciary and the fight against corruption.

“We propose to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status. We have also recognized Georgia’s European perspective,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Community Directorate, in a speech at the Conference of EU Ambassadors.

Von der Leyen has assured that “the winds of change are blowing through Europe again”, as it did in the 1970s “when Spain, Portugal and Greece” opted for democracy, and has chosen to give the Western Balkans the EU’s support to show.
