Controversial zoo – lion killed boy (6) in zoo in the Gaza Strip

Date:

A lion killed a child at a zoo in the Gaza Strip on Monday. The predator fatally injured the six-year-old after he got too close to the cage, police on the Mediterranean coast said. The incident reportedly took place at the Asdaa amusement park near Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip. Police temporarily closed the zoo after the boy’s death to investigate the circumstances.

It was the first known death by a predator in the Gaza Strip. International animal rights activists have repeatedly denounced the fact that wild animals are kept in disastrous conditions in private zoos in the Palestinian territories. The amusement park in question is said to be operated by the radical Islamic Hamas.

Zoo confirmed incident
The zoo confirmed the incident on its Facebook page: “We mourn the soul of the child Hamada Nadal Hassan Qutit. We ask God to have mercy on him and comfort his family.” Details about the incident were not released.

Zoos in Gaza controversial
The organization “Four Paws” had previously described a neglected zoo in Khan Yunis as the “worst zoo” in the world. Dozens of animals had died there miserably because they were not given enough food. Then in 2019, the organization took 47 zoo animals from the Gaza Strip, including five lions.
