Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary general, in Brussels, where defense ministers met, has acknowledged that “the Allies have provided air defense”, but he added, “we need more”.
The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenbergthis Wednesday called on the allied countries to contribute “more air defense systems”” help out Ukraine in defense against new Russian attacks, such as the one directed last week by the Vladimir Putin regime against critical civilian infrastructure in the country.
“The Allies have provided air defense, but we need more. We need different types of air defense: short-range, long-range air defense systems to carry ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones,” Stoltenberg said when asked. from the press, arriving at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.
The Allied chief has acknowledged the efforts made so far by some countries of the organization, making explicit reference to Germany’s latest announcement regarding the delivery of air defense systems to Kiev, explaining that it is “extremely important”. to continue this line, after the “terrible indiscriminate attacks” against the population and civilian infrastructure and against the energy system.
Stoltenberg recalled that Ukraine is a large country, with many cities that could be the target of new attacks, so it is necessary for the Alliance to step up its aid to Kiev, to “defend its cities even more”.
“Protect and defend all allies”
Stoltenberg has emphasized that the Alliance is a “defensive” union, trying to avoid conflict and war, so it focuses on strengthening its “deterrence”, to make it clear to Russia that they are there to “protect all allies and to defend”: “Of course we have the speculations about the use of nuclear weapons underperforming in Ukraine, and we have made it clear to Russia that this will have serious consequences for Russia,” warned the former Norwegian prime minister.
“Russia knows that a nuclear war cannot be won, it must never be fought. And of course we are also closely monitoring its nuclear stance. We have not seen any changes, but we will remain vigilant, we will continue to monitor closely because the Russian nuclear rhetoric and veiled threats are dangerous and reckless,” he added, repeating the analysis he outlined Tuesday.
