War in the Middle East – UN ceasefire resolution failed

Date:

A UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip failed in the Security Council on Tuesday. US representatives have submitted a veto and want to submit a new resolution in the Security Council.

The rejected text from Algeria called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the war between the Israeli army and Hamas. The US draft only mentions a temporary ceasefire. “Under current circumstances, a major ground offensive in Rafah would lead to further damage to the civilian population and their further displacement, possibly to neighboring countries,” the report said. It is still unclear when and if the resolution will be voted on.

Hamas leader traveled to Cairo
Meanwhile, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh traveled to Cairo for talks with representatives of Egypt’s leadership. Haniyeh has lived in Qatar for a long time and has recently been to the Egyptian capital several times for talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not send a delegation to Egypt on Thursday for the previous round of talks in Cairo. According to him, Hamas’s demands are excessive.

Attacks approaching Egypt
There are currently growing concerns in Cairo that many of the 1.5 million Palestinian civilians could flee Rafah and flood across the border (see video above). According to security circles, a buffer zone has already been established on the Egyptian side that can accommodate up to 100,000 people in tents and buildings. However, it is conceivable that this was built before the start of the war.

If Israeli missiles land on Egyptian soil, the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries would be severely tested. To this day, a ‘cold peace’ prevails, although the two countries have many common interests.
