After the FBI raid on the luxury resort Mar-a-Lago, the noose has apparently been tightened for ex-US President Donald Trump. A former employee of the real estate magnate admitted to cleaning up seized government documents at Trump’s Florida home. Shortly before that, Trump had received a request to return the documents, some of which had been classified, the Washington Post newspaper reported.
The employee, who worked at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, worked with the Justice Department and has been questioned multiple times by federal officials, the paper reported, citing people familiar with the case.
The witness initially denied handling sensitive documents, but later admitted to moving the boxes at Trump’s request. The crown witness’s testimony is some of the strongest evidence to date that the former Republican president may have obstructed justice.
Trump spokesperson: Law enforcement officers will be used as weapons
Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich told the Washington Post that the administration of US President Joe Biden is using law enforcement as a weapon against Trump. “Every other president has been given time and respect regarding document management, as the president has the ultimate authority to categorize records and decide which materials to classify,” he said. Budowich accused the Justice Department of providing “misleading and false information” to the media. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Examining the documents is one of the many legal challenges Trump faces. He plans to run for president again in 2024.
