A severe heat wave in Argentina is also bringing wildfires and forest fires to the South American country. In the northern province of Corrientes, about 6,000 hectares of land burned down within days, authorities said.
According to these, three fires in the region were still raging uncontrolled and two other fires were under control.
However, the flames did not reach built-up areas and there were no injuries.
Heat wave since the beginning of this year
Argentina has been experiencing one heat wave after another since the beginning of the year. Since then, more than 100,000 hectares of land have burned in Corrientes alone, according to the Institute of Agricultural Technology (Inta).
Climate change is causing fires to become more frequent and violent
Occasional heat waves are normal in Argentina. However, according to experts, they are increasing in duration and intensity due to global climate change and are even affecting mountainous Patagonia in Argentina. According to the Argentine weather service, the period from November 2022 to January 2023 was the warmest quarter since 1961.
