At least 11 people have been killed and 53 others injured in a bomb attack on a bus in Mali. According to security sources, the explosion happened on a road between Bandiagara and Goundaka in the central Malian region of Mopti on Thursday. The area is particularly often startled by acts of violence by jihadists. The extremists often use mines or homemade explosives.
According to UN figures, 103 people were killed and 297 others injured by mines and homemade explosives in Mali last year. This year, 72 people were killed in such attacks until August 31.
Several soldiers and civilians killed
In 2012, an Islamist insurgency started in Mali, which also spread to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger. Several thousand soldiers and civilians have already been killed and two million people displaced in the conflict.
The UN peacekeeping mission Minusma has been in Mali since 2013 and the UN Security Council extended its mandate for another year at the end of June. The German Bundeswehr is involved with about 1,100 soldiers in the UN mission in the West African crisis country. For the German army, it is currently the largest foreign mission – and it is also considered the most dangerous.
