The American radio host Alex Jones claimed for years that the shooting at a school was only staged. Jones supporters then bullied the families of their loved ones. Now a court has ended the scandal – and fined the moderator nearly $1 billion.
US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is ordered to pay the families of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre a total of $965 million.
Stalked and Threatened Survivors
A 20-year-old shot and killed 20 children and six teachers in Newtown, Connecticut. But the now accused American radio host and founder of a right-wing website has claimed for years that the killing was staged only by actors. His followers then stalked and threatened the victims’ relatives.
Many parents of the murdered children told the court how strangers came to their homes to film them. They have also been showered with insulting comments online.
Well-known conspiracy theorist
It is still unclear how much Jones can actually pay. His website only filed for bankruptcy in April. The 48-year-old convict had repeatedly spread various conspiracy theories, including alleging that the US government was involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York.
He also supported ex-President Donald Trump’s false claim that he lost the 2020 presidential election solely because of massive voter fraud. Jones was also asked to testify before the Commission of Inquiry into the storming of the United States Capitol.
