North Carolina authorities have reported that at least five people, including an off-duty police officer, were killed Thursday night in a shooting in the east of the state’s capital, Raleigh. Two other people were taken to hospital with various injuries.

Local police have indicated in a message via their Twitter account that the suspect has been detained, after reporting earlier at the press conference that the police had “closed” the possible attacker in a building nearby.

Authorities have not released any details about the suspect’s identity or age. However, the television network WRAL News has learned that the detainee is a young white minor. The station previously described the attacker as a man dressed in camouflage and armed with a shotgun, a witness said.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper later confirmed the arrest, thanking the work of the emergency services and security forces. “The swift and coordinated efforts of state and local law enforcement have taken the suspect into custody and we are grateful for their efforts. We mourn the victims of this horrific and outraged act of violence,” Cooper tweeted.

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin also set out the victims’ balance in a news conference with the appropriate authorities, before complaining that it is “a sad and tragic day for the city.” “We must all unite. We must support those who have suffered,” he added.

“Terror has come to our door tonight. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh,” the governor lamented in statements to journalists collected by the WRAL News chain.
