The federal change is not legally binding yet, but Linz City Vice President Martin Hajart wants to be the first to implement the brand new innovation in the Austrian traffic rules and has therefore ordered the necessary plaque in advance.
“On the one hand, this makes traffic flow more smoothly, and on the other hand, this new freedom makes cycling in the city even more attractive,” explains Vice-President and Mobility Officer Martin Hajart about the benefits of Austria’s first crossroads where cyclists see red can turn right.
Premiere at the intersection of Landstrasse and Bürgerstrasse
“There is already a corresponding ordinance plan for the intersection of country roads and civil roads,” says Hajart. Linz will be a pioneer as it is well prepared for the implementation of the new Austrian traffic rules recently adopted in the National Council. The required traffic sign was ordered in advance and would be delivered shortly. Once the federal amendment is legally binding, the plaque will be posted.
Execution planned for a dozen intersections
It should not stay at one intersection. Hajart: “In a first step, there will be ten intersections where cyclists may turn right on red. The mobility planning department is currently drawing up a corresponding priority list, which is still being checked in consultation with the police.” These intersections are then closely monitored in order to draw conclusions about further steps.
