Nothing is sacred to this gang! For days, unscrupulous criminals hunt around cemeteries in Burgenland and Styria to steal expensive copper crosses from the graves. So far, the damage amount will probably exceed 20,000 euros.
The common thieves shamelessly raid the Styrian-Burgenland border area. This week the gang roamed the cemetery in Pinggau. The stylish copper crosses were removed from 13 graves and taken.
Nightly theft
At another three final resting places, the unknown assailants failed in their efforts to remove the crucifix. “The criminals struck as soon as it got dark. However, the coup was not discovered until the next morning,” said an officer of the Friedberg Police Inspectorate. Investigations are underway on suspicion of aggravated theft and disturbing the peace of the dead.
8000 euros crossing
Most recently, the gang appeared at the Pinkafeld cemetery. More than half a dozen crime scenes are known to date. The relatives first have to deal with the painful loss of a golden one and a half meter cross of Jesus on the family grave: “The showpiece is worth more than 8,000 euros. The damage is not covered by any insurance.”
Not far from there, a community worker hung up a fallen cross on Friday morning. The perpetrators apparently wanted to remove the iron crucifix, which cost 1,000 euros, but left it there. Flowers were torn out and bronze pots stolen from other graves at Pinkafeld Cemetery. It is believed that the stolen items are sold on the black market. Investigations are already underway in more than 20 cases.
