Handling Resources – Saving energy has now arrived at school

Date:

Until recently, anyone who consistently swapped the car for the bike was put in the “green” corner. However, with the rapid increase in the price of electricity, gas and oil, energy conservation has become the focus of attention for large parts of the population. The careful use of resources is also taught in the classroom on various subjects.

The attention is great. There is suitable teaching material for every age group. For example, the Upper Austrian Association for Energy Saving provides an overview through picture stories of how energy-saving or wasteful the “waste”, the “high-tech”, the “energy saver” and the “engaged” families live. The boys and girls learn, among other things, that a full bath costs three times as much as a shower.

Consumption is higher among the “high-techs” who spend their free time on the computer and Playstation than among the “energy savers” family, whose behavior protects the environment and can also save the wallet. For example, people do not use their own car as often as possible. Organic should be in their shopping cart anyway.

“Energy: Conscious School” Contest
The “energy:conscious school” competition gave the impetus to save energy. In this competition, students have to deal creatively and substantively with the subject. By selecting the works proposed for a prize, the whole school participates in the energy saving theme.

Subject in interdisciplinary areas
In the classroom, the subject in the interdisciplinary areas and teaching principles is environmental education for sustainable development and economic and consumer education, as well as in the subjects of general education (primary school) as well as biology and environmental sciences, geography and economic education. As a current political topic, it is also discussed in history and political education, and specifically in the field of physics.

dealing with resources
Conserving resources stands for sustainable development – much can be done in the field of training and workplaces, for example to use energy and water efficiently and to gain a better understanding of the wise use of energy. Waste avoidance and recycling are just as much a topic as awareness of sustainable consumption and the ecological footprint.

Influence of digital media
To better understand the influence of digital media on the climate, it is essential to deal with the technical and scientific basis of smartphones and their production. What materials are they made of, where do they come from and are there fair alternatives? And: what happens to discarded appliances? But digital media not only causes high energy consumption, but also offers opportunities to improve environmental protection, for example through teleworking and video conferencing and the resulting reduction in traffic.
