Exclusive insights into the Viennese tuning scene. The “Krone” spoke to the young drivers in Vienna-Döling who are behind the wheel of the fast cars. They talk about what drives them and what makes the grass so attractive before they start their races on the tire.
It is shortly after midnight when the engines roar in Vienna-Heiligenstadt, where Döbling is not yet a posh district. The powerful vehicles are polished to a sparkling clean shine, the chassis is lowered, roaring exhaust systems break the silence of the night. We are assured that all the extras are standard. Meeting places for the young men, most of whom have roots in Turkey, include petrol stations and the parking lots of a well-known fast-food chain. Turkish music can be heard from the open windows.
Cola flows freely and alcohol is taboo for the boys anyway. Every euro saved goes to pimping their cars. They mainly go for German brands. “BMW is a Turkish vehicle”, says PS fan Emre. But Audi and Mercedes also get involved.
People meet here and exchange ideas. Then it’s time for the race for the belt, but not always. Of course, the police have the scene in their sights. The penalties are high. Recently a friend paid 500 euros because his vehicle was too loud. The vehicles drive bumper to bumper in the parking lot. One car is even wrapped in glitter foil.
Diesel and petrol instead of e-mobility
“We love to show our products,” says another. “We love racing and cutting, that’s our principle. “You can’t do anything else in Vienna,” is the owner of a 265 hp Mercedes convinced. Switching to an electric car is unthinkable for these young men. You can’t make a sound with that. It’s a well-known fact that hot ovens attract beautiful women. That’s usually the main reason why they drive here.
Emre also had an accident because of the lawn. That was very bad. He prefers not to talk about it. Nevertheless, the 18-year-old puts his foot firmly on the accelerator again. The boys always come to Heiligenstadt at the weekend. When the car has been parked at home for a long time, everything still revolves around cars. Sales platforms are searched and offers are sent to friends via WhatsApp.
What happens if the car is impounded for blatant speeding? “This is my property. ‘I’d rather burn it,’ says Emre emotionally. His friends agree with him.
Heavy penalties for speeding offenders in Austria
Since March 1, Austria has had strict penalties and high fines for speeding. If you exceed the speed limit, your vehicle can now be impounded. Between January 1 and July 7, 2024, 143 people died on Austrian roads. Speeding offenders not only endanger their own lives, but also endanger innocent road users.
