British Prime Minister Liz Truss’ tenure could end abruptly after just a month. According to a newspaper report, resistance within the party is apparently increasing. Leading Tories are already in talks about a transfer. Meanwhile, even Truss’ finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, had to cancel a trip.
Opposition to Truss in the Conservative Party is growing, according to a report in London’s The Times. A pact between ex-treasury secretary Rishi Sunak and Tory leader Penny Mordaunt is also possible, the Times reported, citing high-ranking party members.
Both had failed in the internal competition for party leadership because of Truss. A ‘council of elders’ made up of dozens of former cabinet members stands ready to ask Truss to resign.
Finance Minister Caused Serious Market Turbulence
The prime minister has also been faced with harsh criticism from her own ranks for weeks. The reason for this is Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng’s budget, which was financed only with debt and which caused severe market turbulence. After fierce protests, including from leading Tories, Truss and Kwarteng reversed the abolition of the top tax rate.
Now a new turnaround is likely: as the newspaper “Guardian” wrote, Truss and Kwarteng do not want to cancel the major increase in corporate tax planned for April. The prime minister had repeatedly emphasized that the increase from 19 to 25 percent that her predecessor Boris Johnson had decided would be dropped.
head of government without reserve
As several media reported, Kwarteng flew back to the British capital early Friday from the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington – there he wanted to discuss with Prime Minister Liz Truss whether another part of his budget would be withdrawn. .
Truss’s tax refund had at least an initial positive effect on the markets, but Truss doesn’t seem to be achieving anything with voters. In a survey by the Yougov opinion poll for the Times, 50 percent were in favor of kicking Truss out, only 9 percent supported the head of government.
