Water rushed into the basement – a huge burst pipe caused the house to collapse

Date:

A huge burst pipe in Zistersdorf in the district of Gänserndorf (Lower Austria) almost caused a major catastrophe. The water flowing into a basement damaged the structure of the house so much that it partially collapsed moments later. The residents have been very lucky.

On Saturday morning the alarm bells went off in the municipality: the installed warning systems reported massive water loss in the Meierhofgasse. Moments later, the first employees were already on site and the fire brigade was also asked for support. But by then countless liters had already flowed into the basement of the house next door, which was not accessible to the emergency services. After the supply pipe was closed and the road was closed, the first huge cracks in the sidewalk were already visible.

Building became increasingly unstable
The repair work on the burst pipe was still in full swing when sudden damage was discovered to the home. The couple who lived there were immediately taken to safety. Not a second too late: the building became increasingly unstable until large parts finally collapsed.

“Luckily no one hurt”
“Fortunately, no one was injured,” said Zistersdorf mayor Helmut Doschek in an interview with “Krone”. While the two residents were able to stay with acquaintances temporarily, their home was secured for the time being. “We are already in contact with insurers and appraisers”, Doschek tries to quickly find a solution. Experts are expected to get a picture of the situation as early as Monday.
