Construction work for the planned refugee tents started on Saturday at the Thalham reception center in St. Georgen im Attergau in Upper Austria. A maximum of 100 additional asylum seekers – only men – must be accommodated. There is great concern about this in the community and local politicians are now considering protests. Tirol and Vorarlberg had previously announced that they did not want to set up tents.
Mayor Ferdinand Aigner (ÖVP) is feeling overwhelmed. “Around 1 p.m. Friday, I was told by the Home Office that tents are being set up at the Thalham reception center to accommodate refugees – and they will be set up the next day.” He is annoyed that there was no communication beforehand at eye level: “Just drive over here!”

EAST Thalham is currently home to 150 refugees. In addition, 80 Ukrainian orphans are housed in a former rehabilitation center in the municipality. “And now about 100 refugees have to be accommodated in the tents. Our community is increasingly flooded as a result,” emphasizes the mayor.
Cross-party protest measures are now being considered. More details will be announced on Monday. “That could go as far as blocking the western autobahn,” Aigner says. Such a step was already planned in 2015, when tents were also erected. At that point, however, the Interior Ministry finally gave in and the tents were pulled down again.
