Unusual values - Reactor 2 in NPP Dukovany shut down after failure

Date:

The more than 30-year-old Czech nuclear power plant Dukovany has suffered another failure. Reactor block 2 was shut down on Sunday after a measuring system indicated unusual values. As factory management said on Sunday, the main valve seal is likely defective.

The director of the nuclear power plant Roman Havlin told the CTK news agency that the reactor would have to be out of service for “several weeks” for the repair work. The nuclear power plant has a total of four reactors. Units 1 and 4 are fully operational while Unit 3 is out of service due to planned fuel rod replacement.

The closure of the second block that started on Saturday shows “that safety is always our top priority,” emphasized the director of the Havlín power plant. “We don’t want to run the block unless we’re sure it’s working properly.”

Greens reiterate demand for nuclear power plant decommissioning
The Austrian Greens took advantage of the incident to reaffirm their call for the closure of the Czech nuclear power plants. The ruling party’s anti-nuclear spokesperson, Martin Litschauer, pointed out to the APA that the reactor block, which dates back to 1986, was originally designed to last 30 years.

“It was foreseeable that old nuclear power plants would cause more and more problems, and this is also apparent from the nuclear disaster in France, where half of the nuclear power stations are currently technically unavailable,” said Litschauer. “All in all, the many unreliable nuclear reactors are driving up electricity prices in Europe and endangering security of supply, especially in France,” argued the member of the National Council.
