Drunk truck driver – just missed a tragedy

Date:

Two trucks rumbled on the Tiroler Inntalautobahn near Völs over the respective oncoming lanes, luckily at 6 am on Monday they were empty. Conclusion: A field of rubble without serious injuries, but a huge traffic jam.

“If that had happened at 8 a.m., it would have been much, much worse,” said a Schoenberg highway police officer. Because then the morning traffic would have been in full swing and on these late summer days many people cycle to work on the cycle path in Innsbruck.

Central rails broken
One after the other: around 6 a.m. a Ukrainian trailer driver (38), driving towards Innsbruck, went too far to the right. “The heavy vehicle was thrown by the guardrail, broke through both central guardrails and crossed the highway and the adjacent bicycle path. The truck only came to a stop there in the bushes,” said the police officer.

Torn guardrail steered truck to the other side
Thanks to good luck, no one was in the western lane, but the cracked guardrail was on the lane. “It looked like a railroad track for another Chilean truck driver (61). The rail also directed him into the oncoming lane.” The injured driver later told police that neither the attempts to steer nor to brake had worked, the truck simply drove past the guide rail, bending 90 degrees, the articulated truck ended up in the “wrong” lane.

Car tilted
The debris on the street was also fatal to a local motorist (21): he also drove on the recumbent crash barrier, after which his vehicle overturned and landed on its roof. Fortunately, the driver also escaped with minor injuries. For the emergency services, the horror accident was a major alarm in the morning.

“It was like a battlefield,” said Herbert Strickner, head of the Völs fire brigade. His team and the professional fire brigade first had to secure and remove the broken barrier. Two specialized companies later took over the salvage of the trucks. There was a total blockade until 7.30 am, later the traffic flowed over at least one lane.

Traffic disruptions on A12 and the alternative routes
The delay of the morning traffic was enormous: the traffic jams receded to Hall-West and Zirl-West on the A12. “It took me a whole hour from Zirl to my workplace in downtown Innsbruck,” said one commuter on behalf of many. Also on the alternative routes through Innsbruck it was often only at walking pace. Explosive: The near disaster was caused by the Ukrainian. As the police said, he was drunk!
