Russia has again threatened to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, the four recently annexed Ukrainian regions are under the protection of its nuclear arsenal. “These territories are inalienable parts of the Russian Federation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
When asked whether the annexed territories were under nuclear protection, Peskov replied: “Their security is guaranteed on the same level as the rest of Russia!”
President Vladimir Putin said in September that Russia would defend its territorial integrity with nuclear weapons if necessary. At the end of September, Russia incorporated parts of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions of eastern and southern Ukraine into its territory.
This annexation is as little recognized internationally as the referendums that preceded it. In addition, the Russian army does not control parts of these areas and the borders have not yet been clearly demarcated.
Russian bombing of Ukraine continues
Russia continued its airstrikes on Ukrainian cities on Tuesday, again targeting critical infrastructure such as electricity and water supplies. There were several explosions in Kiev in the morning. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia a “terrorist state” and stated that there was “no room for negotiations” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
