Summer days in mid-October? A rarity that is also reflected in the measurements of the past decades. Because the mild temperatures that have prevailed in Austria in recent days have set the course for a new, sad record. It could well be the warmest October since records began.
The chance that October 2022 will become one of the three warmest weather records is already extremely high, according to the preliminary balance of the ZAMG. The recent summer temperatures have contributed significantly to this. For example, the 25-degree mark was broken at four measuring stations in Austria on Monday, marking a summer day.
“If you take into account the price so far and the forecast trend for the coming days, this October in the lowlands of Austria is almost certainly one of the three warmest in the 256-year history of measurements,” said Alexander Orlik of ZAMG.
Cold break not in sight
Of course, there are still almost two weeks until the end of the month. Nevertheless, Orlik already dared to make the following prediction: According to the current state of affairs, it could be “even the warmest October in the measurement history, just before October in the years 1795, 1811 and 2001. The final ranking depends on whether there will still be one by the end of the month Cold air blast.” However, that is not yet in sight.
It will remain much too mild in the coming days with values between 14 and 20 degrees. For comparison: In recent decades (climate period 1991 to 2020), the typical maximum values in the last ten days of October in the lowlands of Austria were between about eight and 16 degrees.
Almost no precipitation in some regions
And in some regions, drought is again a problem. Especially in the area of East Tyrol and Carinthia via the southern parts of Styria, Burgenland and the Vienna area up to the Weinviertel and Waldviertel, the month has so far been almost entirely without precipitation.
In Klagenfurt, for example, until October 18 it rained only one millimeter (one liter per square meter), in an average October it was about 40 millimeters during the same period. At the Hohe Warte in Vienna this was only nine millimeters until now, in an average October it is about 20 millimeters here. According to the weather forecast, the next area-wide but probably not too heavy rain is likely to come Saturday.
