Von der Leyen wants to extend Iberian exception to entire European Union

The European Commission president has insisted that this week’s summit will examine all options to curb the rise in energy prices. The Czech minister acknowledges that “there are still differences on how to do it”.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenhas reiterated that it will explore all options to reduce energy price increasesincluding that of extend the Iberian exception to the whole of the EUafter stating that Russia has shut down 80% of the gas it has sent to Europe via pipelines.

In the European Parliament, before the summit on skyrocketing energy prices in Europe, Von der Leyen said that “it is worth considering” developing a mechanism similar to the Iberian exception to increase the price of gas within the electricity in throughout the EU.

“There are still questions to be answered (about this model), but I don’t want to leave any options unexplored,” he said.

Von der Leyen presented the executive’s proposals: the flexible ceiling on the price of natural gas, the joint purchase of 15% of the gas needed to fill its reserves in the winter of 2023-2024, standardized rules of solidarity between Member States in gas supply emergencies and new proposals to reduce consumption.

“We will support Ukraine for as long as it takes and we will protect Europeans from the other war Putin is waging, the war against our energy. The best way to respond to Putin’s gas blackmail is with European solidarity and unity.”

In addition, von der Leyen added that “it has taken eight months to replace two-thirds of Russia’s gas”.

The Czech Minister of European Affairs, Mikulas Bekduring the Council presidency, has reached a “broad consensus” to lower prices, “but there are still disagreements about how to do it“.
