The struggle and courage of the Ukrainian people against the Russian invasion was recognized this Wednesday with the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded each year by the European Parliament to reward the defense of human rights.

The election was won with the consensus of the political groups, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola confirmed, who said when announcing the results in the European Parliament plenary that “no one deserves the prize more dan” than the Ukrainian people, represented by its president, Volodimir Zelensky, the elected leaders and Ukrainian civil society.

“This award is for Ukrainians fighting on the ground. For those forced to flee. For those who have lost family and friends. For all those who stand up and fight for what they believe in. I know that the brave people of Ukraine will not give up and neither will we,” said the Maltese conservative.

The Ukrainian candidacy started out as the main favorite after gaining the support of popular, social democrats, liberals and conservatives who pooled their proposals, all in line with the recognition of the Ukrainian people’s struggle against Russian aggression. It remains to be seen whether it will be Zelensky himself who will personally receive the award at the traditional ceremony at the last plenary session of the year in Strasbourg.

“The Ukrainian people are fighting to protect their homes, their sovereignty, their independence and their territorial integrity, but they are also fighting every day for freedom, democracy, the rule of law and European values ​​on the battlefields,” he said. the winning nomination.

Apart from highlighting the figure of Zelensky, the proposal praises Ukraine’s state emergency services; the founder of the medical evaluation unit “Ángeles de Taira”, Yulia Pajevska; Human rights activist and chairman of the Center for Civil Liberties, Oleksandra Matviychuk; the Yellow Ribbon Civil Resistance Movement, and the mayor of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, occupied by Russian troops, Ivan Fedorov.

This candidacy surpassed the Colombian Truth Commission and activist Julian Assange in the final round of the Sakharov Prize. Recognition of the institution that constitutes the comprehensive system of truth, justice, restoration and non-repetition created under the 2016 Colombian peace agreement was endorsed by The Left, while Wikileaks founder, one of the most well-known in the world and currently awaiting extradition to the United States to face charges of espionage and computer misuse, was promoted by a diverse group of MEPs, including parliamentarians linked to the left, pro-independence and regionalists .
