The “struggle and courage” of the Ukrainian people in the face of the Russian invasion was recognized this Wednesday with the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded each year by the European Parliament in recognition of the defense of human rights.
The candidacy represented by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskythe elected leaders and Ukrainian civil society started out as the main favorite after gaining the support of popular, social democrats, liberals and conservatives who merged their proposals into one that recognized the role of the Ukrainian people.
In the final round of the Sakharov Prize for the Truth Commission of Colombia and the activist Julian Assange.
The Ukrainian people fight to protect their homes, their sovereignty, their independence and their territorial integrity, but every day they also fight for freedom, democracy, the rule of law and European values on the battlefields.
It remains to be seen whether it will be Zelensky himself who will personally receive the award at the traditional ceremony at the last plenary session of the year in Strasbourg.
