Sound barrier broken – already 100,000 e-cars in the state, 8500 in Salzburg

Date:

Mobility organization VCÖ draws attention to the fact that the number of e-cars in Austria exceeds the 100,000 mark for the first time. The share of the total number of cars is now two percent and 14.8 percent of newly registered cars in the first nine months already run exclusively on electricity. According to the Federal Environment Agency, cars with combustion engines cause more than twice as much CO2 as e-cars in their total balance sheet.

In 2012, electric cars in Austria passed the 1000 mark, in 2017 the 10,000 mark and now there are more than 100,000 e-cars for the first time, the VCÖ draws attention to. As of September 30, there were exactly 100,829 cars running on electricity alone, according to current data from Statistics Austria. There are already more than 8,500 cars running exclusively on electricity in the state of Salzburg.

Almost 15 percent for new registrations
While the share of e-cars in Austria is still low at two percent, e-cars already accounted for 22 percent of new registrations in September. From January to September, e-cars had a total market share of 14.8 percent of new registrations. For comparison: Norway had this share in 2016, five years later the share of e-cars was already above 60 percent.

Average 21 kWh per 100 kilometres
Due to the higher efficiency of the electric motors, the energy consumption of e-cars is significantly lower than that of petrol and diesel cars. According to the Federal Environment Agency, domestic e-cars consume an average of 21 kWh per 100 kilometers while driving, while the consumption of petrol and diesel cars, converted to kilowatt hours, is three times higher with an average of 66 kWh.
