A Michigan court on Thursday sentenced three men to years in prison for supporting plans to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The sentences are at least twelve, ten and seven years behind bars, the TV channels ABC and CBS unanimously report. The men then have the option of being released on parole.
The jury in the October trial found it proven that the defendants, as part of a group, aided and encouraged the plot. They therefore did target practice with the leader of the kidnapping plan.
The plans were unveiled in the fall of 2020
Plans to kidnap Democrat Whitmer, Michigan’s most recently re-elected governor, came to light in 2020 after FBI investigators learned of discussions by a certain social media group about the “violent overthrow of certain parts of the government and law enforcement”. With the help of informants, undercover agents and secret recordings of conversations, the plans finally surfaced in the fall of 2020.
In late August of this year, two men were found guilty of the conspiracy in federal proceedings. In a first trial in the spring, the jury did not reach a unanimous verdict.
