After a traffic accident in India, police officers threw the body of an accident victim into a canal. A video of the incident in Bihar state, which hundreds of thousands of people streamed on online networks, sparked outrage across the country on Monday. The recording shows three police officers dragging a body to the edge of a bridge and throwing it over the barrier into a canal.
A senior police officer from Muzaffarpur district told AFP that the three police officers had made a “major mistake” and had been suspended. “It was the body of an elderly man who is yet to be identified,” police officer Rakesh Kumar said. The man was hit and crushed by a speeding truck. His upper body was taken for an autopsy, but police simply threw the badly mutilated ‘lower half’ of the body into the water. According to a media report, the remains have now been recovered.
Footage of the shocking incident was shared on social media:
“Are they police officers or wild animals?”
The Indian police are already considered corrupt and ineffective. In the poor and underdeveloped state of Bihar in the northeast of the country, police work is particularly inadequate. A user of the online service
