From six months – EU authority allows corona vaccines for babies

Date:

The EU medicine agency EMA has approved two corona vaccines for babies from six months. So far, both vaccines from Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna have already been approved for adults and children ages five and six, respectively.

However, the doses for babies and toddlers should be significantly lower. Representatives of the institution announced in Amsterdam on Wednesday that the EU medicine agency EMA has paved the way for the corona vaccines for babies from six months. Both vaccines have already worked in adults, preventing serious illness and hospitalizations. The same applies to deaths after a corona infection.

The decision rests with the EU countries
However, the respective EU member states decide whether babies and small children are offered a corona vaccination at all. According to the EMA, studies have shown that babies and young children are protected against infection even at very low doses. Possible side effects include tiredness, loss of appetite, skin rash or pain at the injection site. However, these are usually mild and last only a few days, EMA representatives said.

They would continue to monitor and evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna vaccines. After the medicines authority has approved the vaccine, it is now the turn of the European Commission to give its approval. However, this is only a formality.
