Two US fighter jets have intercepted two Russian bombers near the US state of Alaska. The two Russian Tu-95 planes flew into Alaska’s so-called air defense identification zone, North American air defense commander NORAD said Tuesday (local time). However, the incident is not considered a provocation.
The bombers were in international airspace when they were identified by the Americans, chased and eventually intercepted by two American fighter jets.
“No threat” suspected behind incident
The two Russian planes did not violate the sovereign airspace of the United States and Canada, it said. The flights would be seen “neither a threat nor a provocation”. Such incidents are relatively common in the region. Foreign aircraft are “routinely observed” and escorted “as necessary,” the North American National Defense Command said.
Relations between the US and Russia are currently extremely tense because of the war in Ukraine – not least because Russian President Vladimir Putin regularly threatens the use of nuclear weapons.
