A reception center for Ukrainian refugees burned down in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania on Wednesday evening. Police are investigating arson. The day before, a swastika scribble was discovered on the entry sign.
According to police in Rostock, the fire started on an outer wall of a hotel in Groß Strömkendorf, northeast of Wismar, near the Baltic Sea island of Poel. The firefighting work on the thatched house, which is currently used as a shelter for refugees, proved difficult. Firefighters tried to prevent the fire from spreading to the entire building. According to reports, all residents and Red Cross employees were able to leave the house unharmed.
District administrator: ‘I assume deliberate arson’
The detectives are investigating a possible connection between the painted swastika and the fire. District administrator Tino Schomann told bild.de: “Even from my many years of experience as a firefighter, I currently assume that the fire was deliberately lit.”
